Hat frenzy

The past few days have been spent making hats. I jokingly declared to my husband that I would make a hat for every single day of the year. That seems a bit ridiculous, but it’s not completely out of the question if I end up with several different hats before the year’s out. I love learning new techniques, and each pattern I’ve come across has its own beauty.

First up is The Big Hat pattern by Davina Choy. The pattern is free on Ravelry, and is a great one to use if you’ve got some super bulky yarn lying around. Mine happened to be Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Wheat colorway. I modified the pattern a bit so that it would fit my larger noggin. I don’t think my conversions were well-thought out, but it still managed to turn out well. I used a pom-pom maker for the finishing touch, and I can’t wait to wear it when it’s super cold out.

Then I made a Seed Stitch Hat for my husband; the pattern is free from Lion Brand. I was initially trying to make a seed stitch cowl, but the Bernat Berella ‘4’ Solids & Ragg yarn made it stiff so I switched to a hat instead. It’s still not the best yarn for the job, but I was bent on removing it from my stash. I made it difficult for myself by changing the pattern to be knit in the round rather than flat and drove myself extra crazy by adding stitches to make it larger. I am definitely glad that I worked the seed stitch pattern for about 5 inches before doing the crown decrease because otherwise it would have been too short.

I’ve previously made the Star-Crossed Slouchy Beret pattern by Natalie Larson last year, but because I didn’t do a swatch, it ended up being toddler-sized. Luckily, I had a friend with a one-year old, and she received it as a present. This time around, this hat actually fit me, and now we can match! I love this pattern; it’s perfect for beginners to learn how to make cables. I learned Jeny’s Stretchy Slip-Knot Cast On method for this one, and I love it. The cast on is perfect for ribbing.
