Another Hat and BAMCAL 2017: February Squares

Well, I’m up to 6 hats so far this year! I really don’t know how that happens. I’m just a hat factory over here.

Oh wait, it’s cause I love making them, plus I joined a Hat a Month KAL on Ravelry so I can keep fueling my obsession.

This month’s chosen hat pattern was Megan William’s Weather the Weather Hat. I highly recommend it. Not only is it a free Ravelry pattern, it’s also well-written (awesome charts!) and a super quick knit. Mine came out nice and squishy. It magically fits me and my husband which is pretty unusual since my head’s much larger than his (24 inches is my preferred fit) so I make many comparisons to the pants in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

I may need to scour Ravelry projects for this because I have a pretty noticeable seam on the back of the hat, and I’ve no idea how to make that more invisible.

Other than that, I love this hat so much that I want to make another. I was kind of imagining the little wavy lines in a different color, but I may need to make modifications cause I don’t want to carry the contrast yarn over 7 stitches. Long floats: yuck!

My other CAL is a Block a Month. And this month’s squares introduced me to several new techniques.

First up is the Kaleidoscope Blossom Square by Chris Simon, a free pattern on Ravelry. Love the way the pattern goes from a hexagon to a square. Easy pattern; I just added several more rows to bring it up to size. It’s so weird how the Taupe colorway looks so much greener next to other colors…

Next is the most complicated one I’ve made: Marigold Mandala Square by Dorianna Rivelli. I found the pattern a little difficult to read. There was a switch in terminology (bobble became puff stitch) so I looked up the puff stitch and followed those instructions which seem different the way the bobble stitch was written out in her pattern. Since BPSCs were not included in the stitches list at the beginning of the pattern, I thought it was a typo and just did BPDCs. My square still turned out okay, but I’d definitely do it better next time.

Here are my finished squares for February:

This month has been pretty great for crafting so far! Hope yours is going well too!
