2017 Sock #1

Hurray! Finally finished my first socks of 2017 which also happen to be for myself! I was going to add the first socks of January, but the month’s nearly over, and, let’s face it, I don’t knit that fast. The only reason these even got finished is because 1) they’re ankle socks 2) they’re size small and 3) I followed a great pattern.

If you’re looking for a great first time toe-up, two-at-a-time sock pattern, Jessica Gore’s Day Off Socks are a great way to ease yourself in – or dip your toes in – yep, a terrible pun.

What took me a while was actually figuring out a good toe-up method. I finally found what I believe is called the Turkish Cast On which completely blew my mind. It took me about five tries to get it right, but once I did, it was smooth sailing. Also, these new Hiya Hiya interchangeable needles are AMAZING. Love them.

For these socks, I followed the instructions for the small size and used US 1 needles and used Jeny’s Stretchy Bind Off method for the cuffs. I think I may need to use my US 0 next time or modify the stitch count because it came out slightly loose on me. Maybe a nice wash will fix it.

I love the way these socks feel; I don’t really want to take them off. I only wish that I could figure out how to utilize the self-striping effect of the sock yarn. Next time!
